ATTICA PRODUCT BRIEF
A brief on Attica’s product range
Most of Attica’s products are handcrafted using the finest natural fibers. The subtle variations in color, texture and finish are the signature of the human hand. Production is a lengthy process rooted in the crafts-based traditions of hand spinning, dying, weaving, wood block printing and embroidery, each with its own regional specialty and character. We use both vegetable dyes and commercial dyes with the goal of minimizing our impact on the environment while striving for the best color properties. Products where vegetable or natural dyes are used may result in gradual fading which is mostly considered as an enhancement to the overall look and feel of the product.
Hand block printing is a very common printing technique that is followed for most of Attica’s products be it Sarees, Salwars, kurtis etc. The process of block printing uses real wooden blocks that have been carefully carved out to get the desired print design. It requires a lot of skill and plenty of practice to be able to hand-block fabrics neatly. The artisans even today follow very tedious methods to give fabrics the right shade of the desired colour. Perfection however cannot be matched to the mill dyed and factory printed fabrics but the subtle changes in colour and variations in print give a premium hand crafted look and feel to the garment.
Cotton is strong when wet and caring for cotton used in all of Attica’s products is very simple. Also the more you wash it, the softer and more absorbent it becomes. Hand-woven cotton fabric has the added value of allowing more air penetration and is therefore cooler, softer, more absorbent and breathes better than highly uniform, compacted machine made cotton fabric. This added breathability means you will stay cooler in the summer and warmer in winter. Hand-woven cotton fabric also has a textural beauty and visible character which is not present in many machine made fabrics.
Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. In most of Attica’s silk fabrics we insist on it being natural, which enables the product to be far more comfortable and elegant in nature. It also brings out an exclusive and unique colour chart which is generally difficult to recreate on synthetic fabrics or blended fabrics. However taking into consideration durability and the delicate nature of pure silk we also have a range of blended silks such as Tussar-Geetcha, Tussar-Matka etc.and synthetic silks.
